in-between school.

The In-Between School was designed around the central concept of creating a unique circulatory experience on each level, while simultaneously integrating formal and informal moments of play, learning, and gathering. Formalistically, amorphous volumes containing various programmatic elements intersect with and are suspended between the floor slabs. This strategy creates a series of dynamic moments that disrupt the uniformity of those slabs.

Light is introduced to the interior of all floors through a series of structural light wells that punch through the floor slabs on the south end of the building. Additionally, a large atrium on the north side draws light deep into the floor plates on the north end of the school. The voids created by the atrium and light wells encourage communication between students of all ages both visually and physically, and on all levels of the school.

The design of the In-Between School is geared towards the curious, inquisitive, and explorative students. Rather than separating the two typical principles of a place of education, this project seeks to evoke a continuity between the moments of play and learning, thus showing that the two can begin to inform one another.
